REDUCE: Food waste & increase composting
Be smart at home
Compost restaurant waste, grass cuttings and garden waste, as this can be as much as 50% of your total waste output. Composting is a free supply of the best possible natural soil improvement fertilizer material for the garden. Composting odors are easily mitigated with regular turning of the compost.
A regular large plastic garbage bin can be converted into a composting bin by cutting breathing holes into the sides, and with regular turning, creates an excellent natural fertilizer. For large volume natural waste composting, a large concrete bunker can be built, similar to the bunker style pods that Evason Six Senses has set-up on their property.

Once a composting heap has reached a reasonable size the temperature in the middle of your heap can reach 70 C within two or three weeks (although it is more usual to find temperatures of around 50 C). It will take 4+ months before your heap is ready to add as fertilizer to your garden soil. You’ll know when composted material is ready when it’s dark in colour and has a sweet earthy smell. Of course, the recently added material at the top of the heap won’t be ready yet, so simply use the composted material from the bottom of the heap, and return not-yet-composted material back to continue the process. |

Monitoring
We recommend regular monitoring of waste to ensure waste minimization strategies are resulting in reduced amounts of waste disposal each month.
